Title of research study: Online Survey of Cannabis Concentrates Use

Investigator: Madeline H. Meier, Ph.D.

Why am I being invited to take part in a research study?

We invite you to take part in a research study because we are interested in better understanding the immediate and longer-term effects of cannabis. In order to participate, you must be at least 18 years old as of the date that you receive this consent form, have consumed cannabis in the past year, and live in the United States of America.

Why is this research being done?

The purpose of this study is to understand and expand our knowledge of the effects of various forms of cannabis, specifically marijuana and cannabis concentrates (e.g., butane hash oil, shatter, crumble, hash).

How long will the research last?

We expect that individuals will spend approximately 20 minutes participating in the proposed activities.

How many people will be studied?

We expect that about 1,000 people will participate in this research study.

What happens if I say yes, I want to be in this research?

If you choose to participate in this study, you will be asked to complete an online computer-based questionnaire. Survey questions will ask you what type of cannabis you typically use (e.g., butane hash oil, hash, marijuana), how much you use, and how often you use. We will ask about past experiences you have had regarding how cannabis affects you. We are also curious about the reasons you use cannabis. You are free to decide whether you wish to participate in this study, and you can skip any questions that you do not want to answer. You will be entered to win one of two $200 Amazon gift certificates and one of four $50 Amazon gift certificates. You will have a 1% chance of winning one of the six raffle prizes. The raffle will be held on September 1, 2018.

What happens if I say yes, but I change my mind later?

You can leave the study at any time, and it will not be held against you.

Is there any way being in this study could be bad for me?

We will ask you to report personal information about your substance use and health. The primary risk to your participation in this study is a breach of confidentiality, though steps will be taken to reduce this risk as described below.

Will being in this study help me in any way?

We cannot promise any benefits to you or others from your taking part in this research.

What happens to the information collected for the research?

Efforts will be made to limit the use and disclosure of the information you provide, including research study records, to people who have a need to review this information. We cannot, however, promise complete secrecy. We are committed to protecting your privacy. We will not ask you to report your name on any of the data we collect. Rather, your responses will be anonymous. We cannot link you to the data you provide.

We will ask you to provide an email address to be included in the raffle on a separate survey that cannot be linked to your responses. Records of your email address will be destroyed after the raffle is held.

Your anonymous data will be retained for a minimum of 8 years on a secure, password-protected computer survey. Dr. Meier and her research assistants will have access to the data. Results from this study may be used in reports, publications, and presentations, but your name will never be used.
